Pronoun usage is an early language skill. Toddlers start to use the pronouns me, my, and mine at around 2 years old and with it comes their assertion of independence. Some children battle with the concept of pronouns.
This is prevalent in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Language learning difficulties and English Second Language Learners.
Pronoun Heroes from Smarty Ears Apps, is a multi-player, multi-level app used to target pronouns.
The Activity Center Screen provides background information about pronouns.
What are Pronouns?
Pronoun Types e.g., personal subjective, personal objective, demonstrative, possessives, and reflexive.

There are four different activities in Pronoun Heroes.
Where is the Pronoun:
The user can select either words or phrases.
Words: The user is shown four superheroes each holding a sign. The player chooses the sign with the pronoun.
Phrases activity: The user is given a segmented sentence and asked to tap on the word that is the pronoun.
Once the user has completed the task, they receive a letter from a super hero acknowledging their success.
Which one is not a Pronoun?
The user is shown the four superheroes each holding a sign. The player is to choose the sign that does NOT have a pronoun.
Find the Picture
The user is shown a pronoun and two pictures. The player has to tap on the picture that best depicts the pronoun.
This section is customizable by tapping on the settings button to choose the pronouns to target. Customizing allows the individual to tailor the lesson by selecting one or more than one app to be worked on during that session.
Let’s use Pronouns
In this activity, the user is shown a picture of a real-life event and given a sentence. One of the words in the sentence is missing, and the player must drag-and-drop the correct pronoun into the space.
This activity allows you to customize by selecting the pronouns from a list. It also allows you to create a custom activity by creating custom pairs.
What I Like
I like the animated superheroes and the letters of encouragement. It is not often that kids get to open real letters nowadays 😉
Find the correct picture is a really useful activity for visually representing the pronouns
Which one is not a pronoun? I really like that this opens up discussion on other language elements.
Finding the pronoun in the phrase:This activity really gives the student a good concept of pronouns because once they have identified the pronoun, I extend the task by asking them to replace the pronoun with an appropriate noun.
The custom activity is useful when working with children who have difficulty with specific pronouns or the ones that are often confused.
Reports are generated by activity, by session and by pronoun type. This gives great information on which pronouns need work and how you need to work on them.
What I would like:
The ability to tap on the word to hear it. This will allow you to work with younger children
I found the text on some of the words a bit small. I would have liked the text to be a consistent size.
Even though you can have multiple users, all users have to do the same activity.
The graphics as rewards are cute but overall the tasks are not very engaging and the students required encouragement to persevere with tasks.
Pronoun Heroes is available on the App Store for $14.99
Smarty Ears have provided me with a copy of this fantastic app to give away. All you need to do is enter using the rafflecopter below.

I have SO many students on the autism spectrum who just do not “get” this concept. Would be another engaging way to work on it.
