Teaching verb tenses is always a challenge for children with a language delay, particularly when trying to communicate a verb that doesn’t have a clear physical act.
Intense Pro is an app set within a carnival theme and is an engaging and fun way to practice Verb Tenses!
Settings
When opening the app you create a profile and an avatar for the student that will be playing the game. The Avatars are limited initially, but as the student earns more rewards he can unlock more avatars. The kids couldn’t wait to unlock the avators!
An email account for reports to be mailed assists with data collection.
Features
The app targets both receptive and expressive skills at varying levels.
a) Receptive
i) Auditory and Written Sentence. The student must choose the correct picture to earn a carnival reward.
ii) Choose the Picture that matches the Written sentence
iii) Choose the Picture that matches the Auditory Sentence
b) Expressive
i) Sound, Image and words with multiple choice answers
ii) Type in the correct form of the verb to complete the sentence
iii) Choose the correct form of the verb by listening to the sentence, seeing the image and choosing the correct multiple choice answer.
iv) Choose the correct form of the verb using an audio option only.

Reports

Reward Games
Students earn Carnival Tickets to play games set in the Past, Present and Future. The students are required to help carnival workers such as magicians, fortunetellers and weight lifters find missing items! -Knock down barriers and hit targets with 12 unique projectiles, including Pterodactyls, soda bottles and dimension twisting energy vortexes. There are 36 fun puzzles to solve and special player avatars are unlocked.
Providing motivation to practice is one of the most difficult tasks and InTense does this perfectly!
The kids LOVED the games and were so motivated to earn more tickets to play.
My only problem was limiting the number of games the students could play. 🙂
What I like:
- Reading comprehension skills can be targeted together with the verb practice as many children ignore the morphological markers in words that affect meaning.
- Although the app is targeted for children from age 6, I have used this app successfully with some of my 4 and 5 year olds on a receptive level.
- Typing the correct verb encourages the student to think about his spelling.
- The ability to work on listening skills using the auditory mode only
What I would Like:
- The app is very detailed, but I would love a record button to allow the child to hear themselves using the correct production. Sometimes the feedback loop really helps with carryover of the skills.
- I would like to be able to set the number of tickets earned before a reward game can be played and to limit the number of games that the children can play in one turn.
When children ask to play an App, then you have a winner! InTense Verb Practise is a WINNER.
